Domain and Hosting for Your Website: What They Are and How to Choose
Many small business owners mix up these two things, then wonder why "the site is paid for, but it's not working." A domain and hosting are two different products, sold separately and often by different providers, and you need both for a website to exist online at all.
Domain and hosting in plain terms
- Domain — the address of your site, like yourbusiness.com. It's what a person types into a browser or sees in search results.
- Hosting — the "place" where your site's files actually live and run. Without hosting, a domain is just a registered name pointing nowhere.
You can buy your domain and hosting from the same provider or from two different ones — the site works the same either way, as long as the domain is correctly pointed to the hosting.
What to look for when choosing a domain
- Extension. A country-specific extension works for a local business, .com if you're aiming at an international market.
- Simplicity. A short name without hyphens or numbers is far easier to remember and dictate over the phone.
- Renewal. A domain is registered for a year and renewed annually — missing a renewal can take your site offline.
What to look for when choosing hosting
- Speed and uptime. Hosting should guarantee minimal downtime — 99.9% uptime is considered standard.
- SSL certificate. Without it, browsers show a "not secure" warning — make sure it's included or easy to add.
- Support. Fast technical support matters a lot when your site goes down outside business hours.
What it costs
- Domain — $10–20 per year depending on the extension.
- Hosting for a business-card site or landing page — $3–10 per month.
- Hosting for a high-traffic site or online store — from $15–30 per month.
When a site is built for you, domain and hosting setup are often already included — it's worth clarifying upfront who actually owns the accounts: you or the person who built the site.
