Instagram or a Website for Your Business: What to Choose
Short answer: an Instagram account is enough if you're still testing an idea and customers come mostly from the feed or word of mouth. A website becomes necessary once you start getting traffic from other sources (Google, offline, another business linking to you), once you want to capture leads automatically, or once competitors with a website start looking more credible to the same customer. Most often the right answer isn't "either," but "both": Instagram for a living presence, a website as the "business card" you can point to anywhere outside the platform itself.
When an Instagram account is genuinely enough
- The business is still testing an idea. First customers, first feedback, no stable process yet — spending a budget on a website is premature.
- All customers come through the platform itself. If 100% of leads come from DMs or stories, a website won't add anything to conversion right now.
- The product is visual and feed-driven. Craftspeople who show work photo-by-photo (nails, tattoos, floristry) already get a portfolio effect from Instagram itself.
When Instagram is no longer enough
- Traffic comes from more than Instagram. Google search, offline ads, referrals — someone googling your business name should find something more official than a social profile.
- You need lead automation. A form that drops straight into a CRM or Telegram is far more reliable than DMs, where messages get lost.
- Trust depends on "official-ness." In B2B, medical, and legal services, a website still reads as a signal of seriousness that an Instagram account alone doesn't give.
- Instagram got blocked or restricted. It happens, and a business whose entire presence lived there alone is left with nothing overnight.
The best option is usually a combination, not a choice
The most common optimal setup: Instagram stays the channel for live conversation and content, while the website is where ads, Google search, or a business card link lead. You don't need a complex multi-page site right away — a one-screen landing page with the key information and a contact form already covers most of the need, and starts at $150.
